The Norwegian Embassy estimates that the total number of Norwegian tourists to Egypt is approximately 40 000 on an annual basis. Considering the size of the Norwegian population, these numbers are quite high. Although precise numbers are difficult to obtain, Norwegian tourists contribute significantly to Egypt's fastest growing industry.
Sunbathing by the Red Sea in places like Hurghada or Sharm al-Sheikh are among the favourites, and these resorts also attract many scuba diving enthusiasts. Cruises on the Nile are also popular. For those interested in Egypt’s cultural riches there are many possibilities, like stays in Cairo including visits to the Pyramids and The Egyptian Museum, or Luxor with the Valley of the Kings and the Karnak temple. There are several theme tours as well, for example one following in the footsteps of Agatha Christie.
Some Norwegian tourists also choose buying only the plane-ticket, and doing the sightseeing on their own to get off the beaten track. There are ample opportunities for admiring architecture, shopping for souvenirs and getting a glimpse of a different culture. Some Norwegian couples also make use of the opportunity to have a combined holiday and honeymoon, by getting married at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Cairo.
